![]() ![]() It was when I got to the end of Virginia’s tape that the game got me. I wandered the supermarket, solving puzzles and engaging in surprisingly solid combat. All you know is that Virginia can’t stand seeing herself after an accident as a child. It drops tantalizing clues as to the story of the people whose mind you are rooting around in, but never give up the full picture until you complete their tape. Moving through the store will give you a bit of a story around Virginia, kept intentionally vague. You enter the mindscape of Virginia, which is a retail store. Seriously, I’m going to spoil the first tape. When you arrive in their mindscape proper, you’ll notice that it is designed around their conditions. These tapes show off the fantastic writing of In Sound Mind. I don’t want to spoil anything too badly, but I will say that these tapes usually show these patients’ ATL, or all time low. On the way, you’ll find recordings of their sessions, where you can listen to the player character talk with them through therapy. Entering a tape for the first time, you need to make your way towards a secondary doorway that places you in their actual mindscape. You, as the player, must collect recordings of therapy sessions and play them back in your office, opening doorways to your patient’s minds. Tapes are In Sound Mind‘s version of levels. These items are gained through playing tapes. I mentioned in the title that I’m going to call In Sound Mind a metroidvania, and I will now explain my reasoning: In the apartment building hub, there will be areas blocked off that you need special items to access. The apartment building acts as a hub world. Due to some temporal strangeness, he can now access their apartments from within his building. In his work as a therapist, he saw a varied array of patients. Actually, it’s something wrong with the entire town he lives in. He has access to his apartment, but strangely, there’s something…odd, happening with his building. In Sound Mind tells the story of a man trapped in a kind of between-place. ![]() I talked to DreadXP Head of Production Ted Hentschke, who told me to stick with it. I was exploring around an old apartment complex and solving puzzles. It seemed like the bog-standard walking simulator. ![]() I must admit, my first hour or so of In Sound Mind wasn’t great. Made by a talented mod team, hooked up with The Living Tombstone, it was looking to change how we interact with horror games. In Sound Mind was on the tip of everyone’s tongues moving into the spooky season. That being said, we can now move into the goofy jokes section, followed by some earnest introspection on the role games play in our mental health…or something like that. I hate to push people away from the things I write, but as someone who lives with mental illness, I understand how In Sound Mind‘s themes could affect people. If any of that bothers you, don’t read this. Before I start in with the pithy jokes and goofy non-sequiturs. I should probably warn you ahead of time. The popularity of the game would add three more DLC maps down the road. The first map for the game mode, Nacht Der Untoten, is a classic. Hitting the box at the point in which it glowed ensured a somewhat better weapon. Still, those weapons would not last forever. A railgun or laser pistol (very historical, huh?) would ensure a few levels of ease. It’s insane working through some of the later levels of this game mode.įans would hope for a great weapon from the box. As the game progresses through different waves, the zombies get stronger and faster. Spending those points over at the weapons box helped you gain new modes of attack. You could earn points by killing zombies and boarding up windows. Overall, the challenge was to keep windows boarded up as well as ammo fresh and zombies at a distance. Players work together to fend off undead nazis. Known as Nazi Zombies, a 1-4 player co-op horde mode stole the show. Although the gam itself was a ton of fun, one thing stood out. What I really want to explore is what began a side game mode. Like past titles, there are several storylines across theaters of war you explore. I won’t dive too much into the story of the game. Call of Duty was shaping up to be an entertainment phenomenon, not just a video game. ![]() This allowed the game to have a bit more credibility as well. ![]() Kiefer Sutherland and Gary Oldman joined on as voice actors and the game was on its way. ![]() The move was to allow for a more cinematic look at WWII. Things like environmental destruction and dismemberment allowed for a more gruesome look at warfare. Utilizing the Modern Warfare engine as a base, Treyarch improved the physics model of the engine for this release. This allowed the series to simultaneously explore modern war scenarios and historic ones. Treyarch realized during the production of Call of Duty 3 that two years was much more feasible to make a game. Overall, fans didn’t quite understand the meaning behind two games so closely released together. More surprisingly, the next game would release later that same year. In June of 2008, Activision announced the series would return to World War II. Modern Warfare released in 2007 via Infinity Ward. Activision has its two studios, Treyarch and Infinity Ward, pulling shifts at this point. That’s largely in part because of the new approach to making Call of Duty games. This is technically Call of Duty 5, but games in the series would no longer go by numbers. Firstly, let’s talk about the beginnings of the game and why it released so soon after Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Under the title Nazi Zombies, the game would return to the series’ starting point: World War II. That game mode first debuted in 2008’s Call of Duty World at War. We’re all excited to try Black Ops Cold War and its Zombies game mode. ![]() In short, let’s get talking about Call of Duty World at War. I adore this game and I’m excited to dive into its rich history today. The hours I spent playing Zombies in this game are likely in the hundreds. The best part of all is the introduction of an iconic game mode. We return to WWII in this entry and Treyarch gets a chance to show what it’s made of. In the grand scheme of the franchise, this is one of my all-time favorites. There’s a lot to be said about the history of World at War. ![]() ![]() The movement of this plasma in the convection zone – the upper part of the solar interior – produces huge electrical currents and strong magnetic fields. The Sun is composed almost entirely of plasma, which is highly ionised gas that carries an electrical charge. Scientists looked to the Sun’s properties to explain this disparity. ![]() The extreme heat of the Sun’s corona is one of the most vexing problems in astrophysics. Edlén and Grotrian’s finding that the Sun’s corona is so much hotter than the photosphere – despite being further from the Sun’s core, its ultimate source of energy – has led to much head-scratching in the scientific community. Over many decades of study, the photosphere’s temperature has been consistently estimated at around 6,000☌. Estimating the photosphere’s heat has always been relatively straightforward: we just need to measure the light that reaches us from the Sun, and compare it to spectrum models that predict the temperature of the light’s source. This represents temperatures up to 1,000 times hotter than the photosphere beneath it, which is the surface of the Sun that we can see from Earth. The coronal heating problem has been established since the late 1930s, when the Swedish spectroscopist Bengt Edlén and the German astrophysicist Walter Grotrian first observed phenomena in the Sun’s corona that could only be present if its temperature was a few million degrees celsius. Our recent study has finally achieved this, validating Alfvén’s 80 year-old theory and taking us a step closer to harnessing this high-energy phenomenon here on Earth. ![]() The theory had been tentatively accepted – but we still needed proof, in the form of empirical observation, that these waves existed. He theorized that magnetized waves of plasma could carry huge amounts of energy along the Sun’s magnetic field from its interior to the corona, bypassing the photosphere before exploding with heat in the Sun’s upper atmosphere. ![]() In 1942, the Swedish scientist Hannes Alfvén proposed an explanation. ![]() ![]() I use both the stalk and the floret for stir-fry, but only the floret as a vegetable side dish.įor an ordinary dinner at home, I like to microwave broccoli just to the point where it is almost cooked and then add salt and pepper. ![]() Also be sure not to overcook broccoli or it will not only turn to mush, but will develop into a very unappealing shade of green. In my quest for the perfect broccoli cheddar soup, I went back to my old friend, the enameled cast iron pot. The broccoli overcooked and got brownish and stinky, and the cheese seized. The virtues of a pressure cooker work against broccoli and cheese, namely extreme heat and pressure. At first I wanted this to be an Instant Pot recipe, but it was never quite right. ![]() The repertoire becomes a lot bigger at an intermediate-level. Some pieces to begin with: Prelude in C major BWV 846 It is very important to learn your piece at a pace you can keep up with because constantly practising at a fast pace or the original tempo without working slowly on the more difficult parts will result in an uneven tempo throughout the piece and some cut corners in the detail of the music. The biggest tip I can give that applies to all levels is to practice slowly. When I learn new pieces during a semester, I usually turn a bit crazy around the 3rd month of learning a piece and question whether it is worth it, but in the end it is always rewarding and completely worth it. It will be fun, exciting, tiring and sometimes you'll think you're going crazy repeating the same patterns over and over until you get it right. It will take several weeks and months to get it right if you practice every day. The first difficulty learning a piece instead of short pieces and exercises is that learning a piece requires a commitment. Once you have gotten familiar with reading the notes, key signatures and have some independence from both hands, it is now time to tackle on your first piece. Some books I recommend are : Mikrokosmos volume 1 When sightreading, a metronome and counting out loud always help if you play inconsistently (for example if you pause a lot between notes). Many teachers will say that writing the letter of the note on top of the note is a big no-no because you won't actually learn how to read music, but rather the letter on top (I'll admit I did that for a few years until I finally got a teacher and that's where I'd say I truly started learning how to read music and learn harder pieces). Absolute beginner / new playerįor absolute beginners and new piano students, I suggest reading and learning many short pieces (8-16 bars) from a beginners piano book to practice sightreading and get used to reading notes. Please let me know if the pieces I choose for each levels are too easy/difficult or if there is any composer you wish were on the list! I would also appreciate suggestion to include in this list as I am not too familiar with specifically beginner/intermediate repertoire as it is not something I think about too much when listening to music or when I learn pieces. I will try to include repertoire from every major period (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century, Modern, Contemporary) ranging from beginner to intermediate level. Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with playing popular and well-known repertoire, I myself played Rachmaninoff's C# minor prelude and Liszt's Liebestraume no.3 in my first year of music college and my first chamber music piece was Saint-Saens's Carnaval des animaux.
